Pteranodon is known as the initial flying creature that the players can ride in ARK Survival Evolved. It can fly for a long time and the players are able to access to it when they spawn the game.

Basic Info

Wild: Pteranodon wyvernus is known as a giant pterosaur that can fly in such a long time. It was called Pterodactyle by others, but this is not true.

Domesticated: There was a player who did catch sight of three Pteranodons that have riders on. Using this way can help you travel around the island quickly, however, it’s not safe or secret to use this method.

Known Information: Apparently, Pteranodon is one of the least abnormal reptiles living on this island. They mainly swallow tiny fish when wandering around the island. But, sometimes you will see them scavenging the dead animals. This makes them one of the usual flying creatures in the game

This creature is not hostile and when it’s under attack, it will begin to fly away fast. But, it will become very hostile and angry if you take away its eggs.

Pteranodon is known as a common creature that is mostly seen on the beaches and the inside areas of the game. This one possesses a long crest and beak, along with imposing wings.

Color Scheme and Regions

This part will reveals some natural colors and regions of Pteranodon. For indicative purposes, the areas underneath are painted in red on a completely white Pteranodon. The painted squares that are displayed below every area’s description are known as the colors that this creature will be generated at random in order to give a general range of natural color scheme. Move your mouse cursor on a color to explore the name and ID.

The Color Scheme information is extracted straightly from the ARK DevKit and it should be seen as correct.

The Server admins can utilize the info about the region in console command like this \”cheat SetTargetDinoColor \”.

For instance, using \”cheat SetTargetDinoColor 0 6\” will help paint the \”patterning\” magenta of Pteranodon.

Wild Stats Level-up

Input the values of an untamed creature to check on which stats it is stressed. The green values on a creature at a higher level are extremely great to breed. For those creatures that you have already domesticated, you could regain the breeding stats by utilizing the tool called ARK Stats Extractor.

After being domesticated, the creature will obtain more bonuses on several stats based on the taming effectiveness. This will cause it to be very difficult to take back the levels on a domesticated creature. Therefore, this tool can be used for the untamed creatures.

These values are only for optimum instances, they always carry additional supplies.

You can check out an external taming calculator to get a level-dependent count of the resources required.

Ingredients for   Kibble (Dodo Egg): 1 ×   Dodo Egg , 1 ×   Rockarrot , 1 ×   Cooked Meat , 2 ×   Mejoberry , 3 ×   Fiber , 1 ×   Waterskin

KO Tactic

After being attacked, Pteranodon will escape away immediately, and you will find it extremely hard to beat this creature on the ground. But, you can use Bolas to disable it in advance, which gives you a good chance to catch Pteranodon when it’s still on the ground taking a rest. When you notice a nice target, you should wait a bit and let it fly down. After that, you must KO it instantly by utilizing Bolas and take a chance to catch it the effect runs out.

Using a basic Electric Prod will be able to KO a Pteranodon at level 120 immediately if you try to attack in the head of it. This can be a good way to defeat one, but you it’s kind of costly for the Prod to be recharged.

It’s very easy for Pteranodon to become unconscious, however, you should be careful with the knockout strategy, especially low-level Pteranodons since they don’t have high health and they can easily take more damage if you utilize the ranged assaults, which is an easy chance for you to destroy using the tranquilizer arrow or a stone. Also, the Pteranodons that are at higher level can be defeated easily if you use only one arrow. These creatures even easily drop into the water and get drowned themselves.

If you want to fly a Pteranodon, you must utilize some controls that are the same as ones using for the movements on the ground, with several exceptions.

When you command them, they will only go forward, but if you don’t command them to move forward, they just stay still and many move in the air. Their stamina will be lost a bit even if they are not moving.

If you want to fly them for a longer time, you should feed them with Stimberry or Stimulant during the flight.

If you want to land, you must hit the jump key (default spacebar), and doing so will allow the creatures to land on the ground, then it will fold the wings. After that, you can hit key E to unmount, but if you want to begin flying again, just simply press spacebar.

Pressing key C will help you do as roll while you are flying with your Pteranodon. But this will make your creature do the damage and its stamina will also run out.

If you want to stop during your flight, you must press and hold key X. But you need to be careful when you get a mount on the shoulder during the flight. If you press key X your mount will be tossed away.

Note: The stamina of domesticated and unridden Pteranodon won’t be lost while they are running for catching up with a player that is also sprinting or riding another creature.

This is the part showing you many tips and ways to battle against Pteranodon. These creatures will not counter, they just always fly away.

The untamed Pteranodons will get aggressive only if a human tries to take away their eggs, so on the whole, they are not dangerous much and won’t be considered as a danger. You should try to give out heavy head damage first if you want to kill it. Taming it will be the same too! You must prepare tranq arrows first, and then shoot them at the head of this creature. Doing so will make it take an effect faster.

You should wait a bit and let these creatures land so that you can perform a perfect shot while they are retrieving their stamina. When they are like that, they become extremely defenseless. Just wait for these creatures to fly down when they are flying. If you have a sniper in your hands, you can try to perform a headshot while the creature is still flying.

Using ranged weapon will help you a lot. The fast pike and sword assaults are able to send fast lover levels.

Hunting or trying to destroy one Pteranodon doesn’t have any real threats, but you must be aware of other hostile creatures while doing your task.

Using a bow or crossbow is a good way to deal with Pteranodon. Their stamina runs out extremely fast, making them fly down into shooting range.

Scouting: Pteranodon is an excellent mount for looking for the environment or cultivating Beacons due to its amazing high speed. (Level up in Stamina and Speed)

Mining Carry: This creature is unable to carry much, however it can become a good mount for carrying valuable stuff back due to its speed and skill of traversing deadly lands and hills. Argentavis is slower than Pteranodon, but it can bear more weight. (Level up in Weight, Speed and Stamina)

War/Damage: Although this creature is known as a high speed mount, the clever riders are able to roll through foes to use up health and demolish Flak Armor. Its skill of snatching the people in the middle of the fight is able to move a fight to your good turn, but you must remember that when being snatched by this creature, you are able to attack it or even kill it. Level up in Health, Damage, Speed, Stamina and Weight.

A Pteranodon can transfer some tiny creatures. Pressing the Alt-fire button (right mouse) will help it carry some. There is a click noise and it’s a signal telling you that this creature is shaking the legs forward. If it grabs a certain creature successfully, you can see that the grabbed creature being tugged at the back of Pteranodon. This is kind of great to divide a tiny animal like Dilo from a group in order to help you domesticate it anywhere. Just hit the alt –fire button once again to drop the creature if you want.

Different from Argentavis, the Pteranodon won’t assault the creature that it is bearing.

The carried creatures won’t be able to assault the Pteranodon while being brought, but they can launch a hit when being picked up or released. But, this is not applied to the players. They can totally assault Pteranodoon while they are being brought, and sometimes, they even kill it, but killing will make both of them fall down. Eventually, the Pteranodon will be completely knocked out with just one hit if you tranquilize it from the head using a crossbow or long rifle dart.

Creatures that can be carried

Pteranodon is able to carry several creatures as shown below:

  • Compy
  • Dodo
  • Dilophosaur
  • Human
  • Kairuku
  • Lystrosaurus
  • Mesopithecus
  • Oviraptor
  • Turkey

When you command Pteranodons to wander, they won’t fly, you can take this chance to breed them safe and sound.

When a Pteranodon goes begin you or when you mount it at high speed, it can be unrealistic because this creature can surpass other creatures effortlessly. This will normally make them create a circle surrounding you, and even get trapped in the legs of the creature that is walking, which makes both of them unmoved.

Pteranodon can fly too fast if you place a bunch of points into Speed. Doing so will make it create a circle around you at a higher speed constantly. You can tell it to stop doing that, or stop following you, then wait a bit until it completely sits down for you to mount.

When you fly on the back of this creature, you should take a look at its stamina, if it doesn’t have much stamina left, it will be forced to land.

You can use this creature to pick up other humans excluding in PvE where it can only pick up Allies from the ground. You must remember that Pteranodon won’t develop mire if it carries too many inventories that surpass its weight stat. You can make it carry by utilizing alt-fire key and it will help transfer the allies to many areas or to destroy the foes. If its stamina runs out and it has to land while carrying someone, it will drop them.

Pteranodon flies faster than Argentavis, but its stamina will run out faster than Argentavis’

When you are carried by it, and you want to shoot it, your action can destroy it.

Domesticated Pteranodons can be destroyed because of getting drowned when it is on low stamina trying to go behind the players into the water locations.

When it has to land because of low stamina, the domesticated Pteranodons can stand in the air normally, and release the rider after around 1 minute, which will sometimes cause the death of rider.

One Pteranodon can get through a normal door frame while being flown.

In multiplayer mode, you must be aware of turret wielding bases when you fly this creature because those things can fire your creature and damage it faster.

Because of aileron roll and quick melee assault, Pteranodons are known as good fighters. You can use and fly it to hunt down the grey. But they can become easy prey for the ground and air dinosaurs because of their low health and stamina.

Due to their speed, they can overtake an Argentavis or Quetzal easily.

You can feed a domesticated Pteranodon with Stimberries while you are flying them.

Irrelevant notes for the game

The game classifies Pteranodon as a carnivore, but it’s a high chance for the real one to be piscvorous

Although, Pteranodon means “Toothless Wing”, the ones you saw in the game are depicted with tiny pointed teeth.

They are depicted with pointed teeth and wings, the real ones didn’t have such compositions.

The animal’s skull displayed in the dossier is not Pteranodon’s, it’s Caulkicephalus’s, which can be considered as a misnomer.

Despite the fact Pteranodon was considered as one of the largest flying creatures, it just only had burdensome size, and its weight is just the same as the tiny child.
